Giuliano Fujiwara Autumn/Winter 2011

I came across Giuliano Fujiwara's autumn/winter 2011 collection. This collection emphasises his affection for a minimal aesthetic, strict silhouettes and a monochromatic colour palette . "Traditional menswear is restricted with numerous rules. My clothes are based on the classic look, but I have eliminated inflexible rules," says Fujiwara. Giuliano Fujiwara is a Japanese fashion designer. He studied law and oriental literature at Chuo University and design at Bunka College of Fashion, Tokyo.

Katharina Fritsch

Katharina Fritsch is a german sculptor. She was born in Essen, Germany. She currently lives and works in Düsseldorf. Fritsch‘s art is known for sculptures and istallations. One of the remarkable features of her sculptures are always the monotone colours, the psychology and expectations of visitors and finally the minimal design. Her work has been the subject of many exhibitions all over the world, like the Tate Modern or the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Katharina Fritsch represented Germany at the Venice Biennale in 1995.

Jil Sander Autumn/Winter 2011

Raf Simons continued his colourful palette and minimal aesthetic for Jil Sanders‘ menswear a/w 2011 collection. Even though the first looks were dark, we soon saw a bunch of colours: From dark blue to lime green and from magneta to orange. Ribbed turtleneck jumpers, bomber sports jackets, rounded neck long sleeves and simple coats were part of this journey. The main material throughout the latest collection was nylon. The Outerwear items were voluminous in shape, trousers and suits have been given a minimal and slim cut. Finally the whole collection was about going back to the roots of Jil Sanders‘ menswear.

Oskar Schlemmer

Oskar Schlemmer, Triadisches Ballett (Triadic Ballet), 1922. Costume.


Oskar Schlemmer was a German painter, sculptor, designer and choreographer from Stuttgart (1888-1943). He joined the Bauhaus school in 1920. In 1923 he was hired as Master of Form at Bauhaus theatre workshop. Oskar Schlemmer‘s most famous work is “Triadisches Ballet“ and he also did the art work for the famous post punk band Bauhaus. Raf Simons worked with the archive of Oskar Schlemmer in his AW 2003 collection.

Yet again a fan of Lanvin's campaign. Shot by Steven Meisel. I can barely think of a better way to showcase the collection of long, drapey, luxurious dresses.

Proenza Schouler is one of the few labels in my book that stays exciting and unique season after season. Yes, they also DO have an it-bag that women drool over around the world but in their case I am quite content with it since the product is truly fabulous and as we all know it's the sale of accessories that labels actually survive on.

I just admire the way they pair cool and refined cuts with all those patterns and prints a simple dresser like me usually would shy away from and combine all these elements in a way that makes me shriek iwantthisss. Just as it is the case with the pre-fall collection above (via style.com)

A while ago, arte also showed this documentary by Loic Prigent depicting the last 24 hours of preparation before their Fall 09 show in New York, which finally made me fall for them completely:

As the SS campaign images are all making their way through the digital atmosphere I think it is only appropriate to contribute to the slight Mr. Simons overload we are creating on this blog atm. BUT the images for Jil Sander SS11 shot by Willy Vanderperre starring Yannick Abrath and Daria Strokous are just too sublime to not be posted (I will spare you with the omnipresent miu miu ck prada hooha). Bring on the bright orange and the block stripes, can't wait for this dreary winter to be over!

And on a sidenote, surprisingly with much less ado than I expected, the soon to be launched Navy line has also its first face with Valerija Kelava, another one of my fave female models that do not quite fit the crowd. The campaign has a total different look then the mainline and I am really looking forward to check out the items when they hit stores this month.

Raf Simons Archive: AW 2003/2004

‘Closer’ was Raf Simons‘ fall/winter 2003/2004 collection. He worked together with the archive of Peter Saville (the graphics designer for bands like Joy Division and New Order). You will find little graphics of Peter Saville on jackets and sweaters. The fall/winter 2003/2004 collection “reflects on the process of growing up and (re)considering adulthood, citing references to childhood dress codes, formal business looks and ghetto."

Earn your laurels, girl.

One of my London faves, Richard Nicoll (oh i still regret not having snapped up one of his pieces at the ra sale last wknd...) has created a spring collection for Fred Perry Laurel Wreath and the best part of it all is that unlike the Raf Simons lines it is for us teddy girls at heart! He is referencing his candy-colour-blocking SS09 collection and threw in a heap of 50's references for good measure.

I am loving it already and will keep my eyes peeled when the collection hits on 24 Jan.
